Rob Coyne's Musical Journey

Rob has been playing music for over 20 years with a vigorous passion for creating and inspiring people of all ages in and around the East Bay of Rhode Island. He is a well-versed musician that specializes in a variety of styles, including Funk, Jazz, Rock, Drum Corps, and Reggae. He is proudly a homegrown product of Warren, RI and was able to realize his dreams of opening Rob Coyne School of Music education with the help of EforAll (Entrepreneurship For All) South Coast's Accelerator Program.

The First Note

Rob's musical journey began at 9 years old when he received his first drum set as a Christmas present. At about the same time he was learning to to read and write, he was also learning various styles and techniques on the drums under the guidance of Berklee graduate and Warren native, George Correia. After transferring from Our Lady of Mount Carmel to Kickimuit Middle School so he could pursue their band program, Rob excelled and later joined the school's jazz band. There he made connections with some other musically talented friends and formed what would become the band, Blew Milk Soap. Blew Milk Soap played an instrumental role in the East Bay's live music scene in the early 2000’s. As young 15 year-olds, they played in the same bars and clubs that the big boys were playing in, not just in the Bristol Warren area, but all over Rhode Island, with overwhelming support from the community. This incredible amount of support from the community is what helped make the dream of playing music a reality for Rob. Later, he would take part in the concert, symphonic, marching, and jazz band at Mt. Hope High School, which helped pave the way for his future as a performer.

The Future Sounds So Good

As a full-time working musician for over 20 years, Rob has, and continues, to play in various bands such as, Blew Milk Soap, Minor X, Pearly Baker all over the East Coast in venues such as The Met, Narrows Center for the Arts and The Zeiterion Theater. He has played with and shared the stage with music legends Quinn Sullivan, Dennis Dunaway, and members of Blue Oyster Cult. Rob found his calling as a drum teacher in 2012 and is currently part of a grant program funded by the Bristol Warren School District, where he works as a percussion instructor for Kickemuit Middle School. To bring his musical journey full circle, he started the Rob Coyne School of Music Education in Warren, RI - the same town that put him on the map in the first place. Rob and his fellow music instructors are focused on keeping the music alive and revitalizing and elevating the local arts scene, and most importantly, giving back to the same town that helped make music a reality to him.
